We will explore questions often asked including, “Will I ever be able to go on; will I ever be happy again? We might instantly become a single parent or widow, or we may no longer be caregivers. Once you’re done with that, you can depart the House of Grief. A conversation with Shadowheart will put a final note on her storyline, but otherwise, you’re done with the Daughter of Darkness storyline and the House of Grief in Baldur’s Gate 3. An Inquirer of Grief will appear and begin asking questions. With a successful Perception check, the party can realize the Inquirer is using Detect Thoughts to probe through their thoughts. Selecting "Drop the act. You're not here to help - you're trying to dig around in my thoughts." will end the Mapping prematurely. If Shadowheart is in the party and sits on the bench, the Inquirer will forego the Mapping and simply reveal herself, telling Shadowheart she has much to discuss.

Dilemma: Save Shadowheart or Give Her to the Mother Superior
To progress Shadowheart’s story, the quest Daughter of Darkness must be completed. In this quest, we learn why Shadowheart worships Shar and whether it is possible to save her. For Shadowheart‘s companion quest, you must find the House of Grief and complete a fearsome crypt.
Head to the House of Grief
You are free to allow Shadowheart to investigate Mother Superior or kill her at this point. We recommend the former option so Shadowheart can have a proper closure to her story. Once Viconia DeVir has been defeated, you will get Viconia’s Walking Fortress legendary shield as a reward. Before starting the quest, make sure you have recruited Shadowheart. You can also start this quest without Shadowheart by talking to a man named Arves on a bridge north of Elerrathin’s Home. We also recommend recruiting Minsc and Jaheira for some additional dialogues.

Having a druid in your party drastically increases your chances of victory, as you can use the summons to crowd-control Viconia DeVir. Once you defeat Viconia DeVir in BG3, Investigate the House of Grief quest will be completed. Investigate House of Grief is a quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 that takes place during Act 3 in the Lower City. This quest also progresses the “Daughter of Darkness” quest to conclude Shadowheart’s story meaningfully. This place of insanity is controlled by a Drow, Viconia DeVir, and her Sharran disciples.
Spare or Kill Viconia DeVir
If you go to the South, where you fought Viconia DeVir, you will notice a barricade. Destroy it with your weapons or any fire spells to find a ladder. This ladder will lead you to a cave with Night Orchids in it. Aside from this spell, you can also get near any light source to prevent getting damaged by the Darkness. Viconia is not only immune to Radiant damage, but she can reflect the damage 2x to the attacker.

You can choose to side with them in getting them as allies for the final battle, or defeat them to progress Shadowheart's story in finding her parents. It makes no difference whether or not you kill or spare Viconia DeVir, so make the choice based on how you’re roleplaying BG3.

An important part of healing is knowing that you are not alone. Seek support from your friends, family, or faith, or join a bereavement support group. Remember to take care of yourself; to eat, sleep, and exercise even when you’re too stressed or fatigued to do so. A healthy alternative is to seek the help of a professional therapist. A therapist can help you work through your intense emotions in a safe environment.
A piece of Shadowheart’s soul is trapped in the House of Grief and you need to free her in BG3. A cutscene will begin with the Mother Superior when you step inside. Put Shadowheart on the bench and let her continue the conversation. If you want, you can also have a conversation by sitting on the bench. However, since this is a part that affects Shadowheart’s storyline, it would be best for her to handle the dialogues.

This does mean you’ll have to fight everyone in the room, though. If Shadowheart is here as a Dark Justiciar seeking to seize control, you’ll have an easier fight on your hands. To complete the House of Grief in Baldur’s Gate 3, you need to venture down into the depths of the Sharran hideaway to tackle two problems. Obviously, you’ll need to find and rescue Shadowheart’s parents.

Sean has also written for EDGE, Eurogamer, PCGamesN, Wireframe, EGMNOW, and Inverse. Whether you chose to kill or free the Nightsong will alter your reception to some degree, but there are points of interest in the House of Grief either way. If you haven't found an entrance to the House of Hope yet, you should grab the surveillance notes about Gortash that are on a table in the Infiltration Training room on the lower level. If you do decide to face off against the cult, you can also loot the Legendary Viconia's Walking Fortress shield from Viconia DeVir. I spent a long time running around the area before I found the lookout.
Refusing to give Shadowheart will trigger a battle with every enemy in the room, but you will able to progress her story in finding her parents. Strangely enough, we only read of certain tidbits experienced by random people recounted via voiceover. Our character didn't gain a new power, ability, or passive. You can talk her down, but more likely you’ll need to fight her, especially if Shadowheart is involved.
There, you’ll find a shabby tent-like setup next to a well with a man named Ferg Drogher standing underneath it. This man is a peddler of mementos, and, believe it or not, a Sharran. Use Shadowheart to talk to him and he’ll nudge her to the Cloister of Sombre Embrace—a Sharr temple underneath the House of Grief. If you’ve managed to make it this far without knowing the answer to that question, you probably need to stop skipping the cutscenes in Baldur’s Gate 3. Shadowheart is arguably the most core companion in BG3, as one of the first friendly faces you meet (alongside Lae’zel) and bringing the Artifact into play.
Perhaps of a loved one due to death or divorce, but also the loss of a job, a pet, financial stability, or safety after trauma. Feelings of grief can be overwhelming, and it can be hard to know how to manage and overcome these emotions. It is important to have patience with yourself and others during this process as it is a healthy part of healing.
